Gregg Helvey

Gregg Helvey is a new highly regarded film director and producer, and comes to Wellington hot off the back of the Oscars where his film ‘Kavi’ was nominated for Best Live Action Short Film. Whilst missing out on the main prize this time around he did win the Student OSCAR Gold Medal Award for the same film in 2009. ‘Kavi’ tells the story of a young Indian boy who must decide whether to continue working under slave like conditions in a brick kiln, or risk everything in pursuit of his dreams of playing cricket and going to school. A graduate of the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts, Gregg has also made documentaries for National Geographic and the BBC as well some other notable independent films. A director who uses film to tackle social injustice through captivating fiction his film masterclass is sure be a cutting edge and insighful event.

This is a happy return for Wellington:  Gregg was an Artist-in-Residence here between his time at the University of Virginia, and the start of his 'Kavi' project. Welcome back, Gregg.
